To walk without fear can be an act of foolishness if we are ignorant to the realities that surround us, as much as it can be a breakthrough in the exercise of freedom if we walk fearless with full knowledge of all that is before us. Knowing the truths that make up life as we know it can be a daunting experience. Quite easily we are able to slip away from acknowledging the truth of the matter through different escape outlets. Large weapons that are technological marvels are used, religion is thrown into the mix, people are pitted against each other, innocent civilians, and entire families pay the price of these games. In school, we are taught how to think and what to think about. In the United States of America, we are taught, or at the very least, we are prodded to be active citizens and exercise democracy, but as we begin to understand the active machinations of how the world actually works, a communication is received to not speak up so much, to not delve so deeply and to stay calm and carry on. Guarding your children's hearts and minds in an age of rampant liberalism requires a parent's complete set of executive function skills. The molding and compacting of daily images, sounds, and metacognitive impressions far surpass that which they receive from their parents.. or single-parents. Almost every single, if not all executive function skills can be modeled by a parent just being a parent. The ability to self-regulate, self-monitor, modulate behavior, inhibit response, focus, sustain attention, exercise mental flexibility, and have goal-directed persistence are like fields of corn that are are either harvested by parents, or left 'fallow' (uncultivated).
