The older we get the harder it is to change our ways. Our ways form mental habits complete with brain circuitry, like roads which facilitate our thinking patterns. These can be changed and the younger we are, the more apt our mental flexibility is, allowing us to change the course of our habits like pivoting on a dime. Wether it is typing an essay or writing a short poem, playing a musical instrument or dancing up a storm, self expression can be a form of communication, a work of art and a pathway to bringing our inside selves to the outside. What is self-expression anyway? It is a willful expression from us usually communicating a message and is unique to each person. A painting, a way of dancing, the words chosen for a haiku, all of these denote an expression of the self. This includes heart and mind. What is important? What is of value? On the surface, the world with all its happenings and events race by non-stop.  Our need to make money to pay for our living is a constant pull upwards. Weekends roll in and we collectively sigh and reach for a calmer pace. Monday and Tuesday surely come back in and we repeat the cycle. If you like what you do your outlook is easier, but if you are not head over heels passionate for your work the prospect of returning to work may seem arresting. Time flies, weeks go by. Seems like it was last year just yesterday. Everything repeats itself. Those will young children get a new lease on life. The kids are not routinized to the ways of this world and tend to brim with life and joy. I know how it is. I have kids of my own. Still, everyone must work and a predictableness to our lives is constant. Some like this to be the norm. Predictability.  That is fine. Some of us do not. Some of us like order mixed in with spontaneity and adventure....

What does freedom mean to us? What does family mean to you? Is the word community compartmentalized in a bland category in your mind? How can we 'fire up' each other and put all our oars in the water to do what is right and to keep at it? Can dancing be a facilitator in keeping our hearts alive? If change starts in the heart (soul), then the home is the lab where it flexes its muscles. Freedom carves itself into our daily life, our very lifestyle, by bold actions that start in each of our hearts. The family unit that has a mover and a shaker is shifted towards spontaneity, leadership, boldness, gentleness and flexibility in thinking, feeling and action. In this way, mom and dad become the primary teachers in showing their offspring what it means to be free and what family can mean beyond our every day lives. Each person has incredibleness in them. I don't find my students. I put my bread in the water and the students find me. Where is his strength? Is this the teacher? Oh. I see now. Let's do this. I got this! A great coach role-models, leads, supports, instructs, guides, corrects, mentors... and gets out of the way. Coaching then, is an art of balancing the player's strengths, fleshing out talents, strengthening deficits naturally and nurturing the mind and heart to reach higher levels of performance. Learning is not just a solitary action anymore with this understanding, but a humbling mindset that opens the mind to receive.  A central tenant to coaching duties is being able to impart knowledge so that learning can happen. The effective transfer of intellectual property comes easily when you seek to engage the mind via the heart first.
