Rome was not built in a day, but it was built with methodical planning over time. The inner cities housing project architecture of the United States though, appear to have been created with no architectural passion. What does the building tell the young child who lives there? What can be done to change this paradigm? These hideous mega apartment constructs seem to be places to pack animals, stacking them ever so high or across large swaths of bleak landscape. One need only to look at America’s urban city centers to see the teeming mass of people stocked into the prison-like blocks to recognize how our humanity has staggered in its progress. Yesterday, at the New York City Surfers Healing event at Lido Beach in Long Island a volunteer staff member thanked me for helping out, to which I quickly pointed out that we are helping each other out and we are doing it together. Positive disruption use to be a market term for a product starting at the bottom of the market and moving its way up to the ‘top’ of the market using organic-grass root methods and integrating local community to spur its growth. There is no physical product with me, save what is offered. Not readily commodified, the positive disruption brought forth takes on many shapes with the aim of changing culture, how business is conducted, how special education is instructed, the way government is responsibly managed, strengthening the foundation of the family and pointing our compasses to God. How many dollars is a life worth? Can a skatepark make hard crime, like murder, plummet in a given geographic area? Recently, I read in a New York newspaper (with all the news that is fit to print) about the top most crime-ridden sectors of New York City. The article identified rape, murder and robbery as the main issues. How would a top-of-the-line skateboarding skatepark benefit Harlem, New York?  How about South Norwalk, Connecticut’s, Ryan Park, right next to Washington Village?  In California, Pennsylvania, and in many smart towns and cities across the country there are mega skateboarding park facilities, complete with night lighting and ample skateboarding space.  These allow a greater number of athletes to skateboard simultaneously, as well as provide a longer period of time where people with different schedules can use the park. The more I practice serving others directly in the community the more my eyes acclimate to a different world that contrasts between empathy and evidences of apathy. My attitude as I initiate #OperationLovingkindness in Harlem, New York is one of humility. I begin by introducing myself and my purpose of bringing a revival of community and family in Harlem and then I begin to listen. I take stories from people who have shown selflessness, I bring energy and take smiles. John was sitting in a ‘walking-chair’ for seniors, just like the one my own grandfather had the last years of his life. John is a father of two, and grandfather of seven. Puerto Rico... I am one of your sons. Could you imagine a new nation? Could you imagine a new day? Would it be possible that we could rise together, take the best of our past and shoulder on to the future with a new outlook on how life could be here on the island? I see armies of young adults with gladness in their hearts and passion in their bellies desirous to positively disrupt the way business is done. I see a Puerto Rico looking to catapult itself into a new dawn where the imagination of young and old metamorphosizes into one of entrepreneurial purpose. I see a Puerto Rico where young men and women, old timers and ladies move away from simply working to live and be happy, to a vision where our work becomes an adventure on bettering our island from the inside out.
