The workshop of an individual who prioritizes its use as his or her means of sustenance can be oft times a think tank; a seat of possible ingenuity; an entrepreneurial place of ideas; a well-spring of epiphany and an opaque path without signs or guarantees. Dynamic creativity, patience and self-determination being the tip of the proverbial spear. Time and effort always exacting the cost of labor; the individual ultimately understanding that the basics of life demand financial costs that must be met. Failure being common only to those that endure; strange and finite to those whom push away and leave off. The place itself accruing clarity of purpose according to the critical thinking and physical effort of the aspirant; the power of ideas gaining and losing steam in direct proportion to the successful efficacy of the goal-directed persistence of the sole worker.
In the mid 1700’s to early 1800’s, Scottish extraordinare’ James Watts, crafter and engineer of musical instruments, sailing ship instruments, and toys, also had to become a business man; that he bring his work to the market place and receive agreeable and just recompense for his expertise, if it be found of practical use. So it is that the mathematical engineer had to also be savvy at business; understanding how to access the marketplace, and have his work and himself to be known within the market; a challenge itself to all who venture entrepreneurially.
How should our American schools respond to the practical understanding that the establishment and growth of economy is best sustained in the wealth of generations of individuals taught to appreciate the responsibility, privilege, and right to be financially independent? Is it not the responsibility of parents and schools to strengthen individuals to be as independent as can be? Is it common sense that financial independence would be a great priority? In so accomplishing such a reality, is it not so that an economy of individual economies becomes dynamic, vibrant, and stronger than an economy that is made through the defaulting of individual financial independence, and instead, through the secondary stewardship of political representatives who apply often times ideological economic policies for the masses?
Watt’s began a path that favored his interest, and then later on, with the advancement of his experience and proficiency, bringing his work to the market place through the catalyst of business partnerships. His start was in the workshop of his father; using his own separate tools, plus the resource of having access to a fiery forge to heat metals and give them shape with a hammer. Being homeschooled, his mother taught him how to read; his father taught him mathematics and how to write, and in later years, he was able to go to a school to study mathematics, and languages (Greek & Latin). His affinity and chosen interest though, was being in the workshop, and ironically, the study of these two languages was not two his liking though mathematics, a language itself, was.
That he is credited with ‘re-tooling’ the steam engine to make it more efficient in its heating & cooling process, and that that accomplishment positively disrupted the economy of nations and the world itself is the common story that is known of Mr. Watts. —It was the Watt’s steam engine that greatly accelerated the economic development of the American western frontier—That he was a mathematical craftsman, engineer, and ‘community entrepreneur’ who was able to make a living from successfully welding his expertise with the ‘free market’ is the nucleus of his original power: creating his own economy and dramatically impacting the greater economy of his country and the world, is the story oft not told, and the magic that needs to be integrated into American schools,—that future generations enter life with a sense of self-determination, adventure, and responsibility for the trajectory of their life,— being resilient risk-takers and dignified initiators of welding their interests unto capitalistic endeavors. The fruit of their continuous unrelenting efforts finding (or not finding) practical success in the ‘free market.’
Can the American families, the parents; our school educators, or local, state and federal government representatives, see that education should be a process of becoming independent,—and yes, being of value unto others and the community; and if independent, financial wealth would be of immediate importance for individuals to pursue their goals. Government can never be the permanent answer. The national economy is the largest market of a country and the people must be learned in being proficient within it. That is be so that some people prefer at this time to not be dynamic, to not be of value unto others, to not want to be entrepreneurial or self-determine their life beyond their comfort zone is their regard and they have a liberty to stay in such a perspective and situation, but that our schools not instruct in such life-building opportunity; not teach individuals in how to apply the possibility of each venturing forth to improve their life and the enrichment of their future family, along with failing to teach people to be critical thinkers-that would be a failure in the goal of educating Americans to be their best.
James Watt’s may have not thought of himself as an ‘entrepreneur,’ but he certainly understood himself to be an expert in is field and he understood that he would have to find a away to earn a living through the efforts of his own work. He brought his craft to the market place, and that market was open to him. His original power was not his musical and ship instruments, nor was it the steam engine that he perfected or in the university job that he landed, —his power was his perseverance, his patience, his clarity of thought, his belief in what he was doing. That power is innate, and intrinsic; it does not initiate in the halls of national government, nor is it a limited source that can only be understood by some; that original power can create economy, it can motivate a multitude, it can move hearts & minds; only, we must have that ‘know how’ in our field(s) of expertise and we must bring it to the free market.
That would be an example of the office of government being used as an instrument to control an important market, nay, along with other verified reports, of seeking to irresponsibly target and destroy it. Of great importance, if the over-regulation of that particular market is being targeted, the ‘tightening’ of entrance into that same market is also being blocked through the multi-step permit process that the traditional energy fuel companies must go through in order to own land, extract, produce, and distribute. That there be environmental regulations to establish the cleanest oil, coal, natural gas extraction and production through the application of leading edge technology is good; and this creates a new market that caters to the traditional energy industry. But that the traditional energy producing market be forced to limit production and also be forced to become a renewable energy company,—something altogether different, that is ‘command & control,’ and is a manipulation of the offices and powers of government that is altogether an estrangement in the mode of business from the American tradition of the ‘free market’ that has made America the greatest economic power in the world.
Biden administration’s regulatory targeting of oil, gas, coal industry: LIMITS market growth decentralization with entrance of new players allows easier regulatory CONTROL of large players.
But the Biden administration and the Democrat Political Party would rather not pursue a hastening of technological innovation in traditional energy fuel extraction, production, and distribution. They have told the American people to get used to them limiting American fuel production (over regulation and tightening of permit process) and blocking Canadian shale oil distribution access (Keystone XL pipeline) to the world; narrowing supply while domestic and global demand of oil, coal, and natural gas continues. Thus, the tightening of regulatory entrance into the American traditional energy fuel market directly impacts new competition within it; entrance of small business into U.S. shale oil market of potentially extractable 4.3 trillion barrels becomes near impossible, and this means that that industry becomes increasingly centralized amongst a few established global companies, instead of further decentralized with smaller business enterprises that would decrease costs of goods & services on a national basis due to that increased decentralized competition of the oil supply it renders, & efficiency standards it brings.
North America has cleanest oil production technology in the world, but Biden is scuttling our oil industry & chooses to import 3,091,550,000 billion barrels of oil into the U.S. in 2021 from 73 countries, including Russia, China, & Saudi Arabia.
Mr. James Watt’s path to be financially independent was not the end goal for him, though it was assuredly important and desired. His affinity and interest in his work and his ability to bring it to the market was the continuation of that path that gave him hope to progress in his progression from making musical and sailing ship instruments, toys, and finally, re-creating a more technologically advanced steam engine that would be more efficient in its process of heating and cooling. His understanding that he could bring his valuable work to the market spurred him to continue his work, whereas the individual that lives in a country where the entrance into a market is closer to an ‘over-regulated’ ‘command & control paradigm will think and feel as if they cannot improve their life, and this squelches innovation and progress.
