Big John: A Tank of A Man / #OperationLovingkindness #Harlem #NYC #positivedisruption #servantleadership

The more I practice serving others directly in the community the more my eyes acclimate to a different world that contrasts between empathy and evidences of apathy. My attitude as I initiate #OperationLovingkindness in Harlem, New York is one of humility. I begin by introducing myself and my purpose of bringing a revival of community and family in Harlem and then I begin to listen. I take stories from people who have shown selflessness, I bring energy and take smiles. John was sitting in a ‘walking-chair’ for seniors, just like the one my own grandfather had the last years of his life. John is a father of two, and grandfather of seven. It was about eleven o’clock in the morning when I began a conversation with him after seeing his pin-studded soldiers cap. I shared that my late-father served also and that I missed him. I then asked John if I could ask him some questions to write a part of his story on my blog and I requested to take his picture, to which he agr...

You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get. @MichaelPhelps @Olympics #socent

You can't put a limit on anything. The more you dream, the farther you get. -Michael Phelps The growth mindset is a central piece to Michael Phelp's mastery attainment as a swimmer. This mindset is as old as time and has also been called the ‘champion mindset.’ A term I interchange with the growth mindset, which is to focus on the process, instead of focusing on a desired end result only. The end is not justified by the means, and how we go about attaining our victories is more valuable than attaining the victory itself.  Mr. Phelps has been an Olympian since the year 2000, starting in Sydney, then Athens in 2004, and Beijing in 2008, followed by London in 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016. In each of these competitions win or lose, Phelps focused on the process, rather than the end result. In Sydney, Phelps finished strong but did not get a medal. This did not deter him. By using practice strategies and effective coaching to help himself be better ,Michael Phelps h...

Be a #GameChanger like #RobertoEnriqueClemente / @pirates #brotherskeeper #hotterthanfireforothers #lion

Over 3,000 hits. Golden glove winner. World Series champion. World Series Most Valuable Player. All-Star, All-American, child of God. He was incredibly concerned with taking care of those less fortunate. He didn't have to. He was already a good man. With his loving wife, Vera Cristina Zabala, Roberto Enrique would fly their and back again and again on small airplanes to such lands as Nicaragua in Central America to clothes the poor and bring hope. A friend of my father and a fellow U.S. Marine, Roberto Enrique Clemente was top-of-the-line major league baseball player. He played eighteen years as a Pirate for Pittsburgh, wearing his stripes for all to see. A humble man who put his brothers and sisters first, even when these brothers and sisters were from faraway lands and could never, ever repay him. He was about doing the business of his Father. A little light, a real star which no second death could extinguish, just like all the children of God. Roberto Enrique Clemente ...

It is Time to Rise Up for #EachOther / #brotherskeeper #PuertoRico #newlevel #community #SocEnt #thisAmericanQuilt

Puerto Rico... I am one of your sons. Could you imagine a new nation? Could you imagine a new day? Would it be possible that we could rise together, take the best of our past and shoulder on to the future with a new outlook on how life could be here on the island? I see armies of young adults with gladness in their hearts and passion in their bellies desirous to positively disrupt the way business is done. I see a Puerto Rico looking to catapult itself into a new dawn where the imagination of young and old metamorphosizes into one of entrepreneurial purpose. I see a Puerto Rico where young men and women, old timers and ladies move away from simply working to live and be happy, to a vision where our work becomes an adventure on bettering our island from the inside out. We have everything we need. Puerto Rico is special and unlike anywhere in the world. A land steeped in a unique culture. A people who are red, hot and full of life. We have natural resources and an agricultu...

Changing Our Ways: Exercising From The #Insideout / #passion #purpose #brotherskeeper

The older we get the harder it is to change our ways. Our ways form mental habits complete with brain circuitry, like roads which facilitate our thinking patterns. These can be changed and the younger we are, the more apt our mental flexibility is, allowing us to change the course of our habits like pivoting on a dime. Setbacks on the road to bring about real change in our life can stem from lack of clarity of purpose, low physical energy, inadequate support by family and community and a non-serving attitude which toughens our hearts against instilling lasting positive changes. ………………………………… Recently, I have been asked what I do for a living many times. I give my generic, surface answers… I am a Special Educator, I am an artist, an Executive Function Skills Coach and co-founder and teacher in a skateboard company start-up. I am then asked what kind of art I make, to which I reply, I create dance videos which are focused at changing the way special education i...

@bethanyhamilton: The Champion of Kaua'i / #Hawaii #women #empowerment #surfing #growthmindset

Bethany Hamilton When one surfs, they are no longer in the realm of normality. Their is wild life out there that will not be tamed. In the summer of 2005 I was living in the Hawaiian Island of O’ahu and had visited Kaua’i to unwind. The island is mystifying. It appears like a giant volcano jutting out from the water. Upon airplane approach the viewer sees an island surrounded by endless blue infinite ocean. From the cliffs of Waimea Canyon one has to ask themselves if they are not in the Grand Canyon.  The breadth and scope of Waimea Canyon, a wonder of the world, is simply another cosm in this varied ecosystem island that is Kaua’i. Daily, the surfing community enters the water to surf and catch waves. Invariably, because we are entering into the habitat of marine life and because the Hawaiian islands are the most remote group of islands on Earth, it is a major hub for whatever sea life is in the Pacific ocean, this includes… sharks. Those infamous moving monster...

Fathers are Just as Important / #ClintEastwood #thisAmericanQuilt #America #children

It is so important to have strong, male role-models in our families and community. Women alone cannot save the world. We need both parents, and the community to raise our children. It is an all-in effort. That said, the deterioration of fatherhood in many parts of our land is directly hacking away at the foundation of what keeps America moving forward. The importance of having upright fathers who are a positive and nurturing presence in the lives of their children cannot be underrated but must be trumped out in front and protected, if our communities are to have any hope of raising strong, healthy children to lead us forward into each new age.  I think of my own father and his manhood…. My late-Dad could have been Clint Eastwood’s brother. Their is an uncanny physical and personality resemblance. Dad was a rolling stone who was working on fishing schooners traveling from the Southern California coast to Hawai’i by the age of eighteen. He was a sea-cowboy in that face...

Go Big on Being Gallant, or Go Home / #chess #politics #eachother #civility #growthmindset

I n a game of chess, civility between players is an expected part of the game. For #theGentleman, a student I work with is on the autism spectrum, chess has been a game we have employed over the six plus years I have been allowed to coach him.  A main skill we work on is being a gentleman wether we win or lose. That is a big deal. A game like chess can serve as a microcosm of life in general that allows the players to practice winning and losing well. For example, I played against my grandfather for three years before ever winning a match. Did I lose out each time, or was I winning experience that eventually allowed me to be the winner? Being a gracious loser is more valuable than being an obnoxious winner then. #theGentleman use to have great difficulty in accepting defeat. Through all the chess games we have played, his trajectory on how he handles the circumstance of winning and losing has shifted in large part, due to the growth mindset conversations we have. I exp...

Scalzi Originals Foundation / #socent #edchat #community #family #SpecialEd

Scalzi Originals Foundation The purpose of the foundation is to facilitate a revitalization of community by introducing fun, effective, practical activities for youth and adults.  The cognitive-physical empowerment aspect of the Scalzi Originals Foundation of youth and their families is central to the vision. This includes providing our services to individuals on the autism spectrum, with Downs Syndrome and other special needs. Likewise, the focused development of executive function skills, soft skills, motor coordination and emotional intelligence is at the core of the foundations mission. Sensitive to the lack of access of such programs in both affluent and poor neighborhoods, the foundation focuses on using social entrepreneurial practices to help bring about the revitalization of communities through its diverse actions. Acting as a social enterprise, the inception of specific programs, like skateboarding, basketball, soccer and baseball, chess, music, art, ga...

Four Questions for the President of the United States of America / @potus :) #servantleadership #family #community

1.  As President, the demands, duties and decision-making that need to be done and met keep you away from ‘being there’ for your family.  Have you been able to find a work/ family life balance?  2. Mr. President, a central aspect to to my work as a social entrepreneur was influenced by the examples of others, including your own work as a community leader. You went out there where the rubber meets the road and were doing your best to exercise justice and liberty. Over the last eight years, you have inspired millions of individuals across the U.S.A.  to go forth and be all that they can be and to do so by becoming socially active as positive builders of their communities. Past our borders and across the oceans, Mr. President, your name, Barack Obama, signals hope and change to being more sensitive, tolerant and outgoing unto each other. It also signifies the spirit of rising above our differences and working together on common ground. W...

-Shifting Gears / @WashingtonVill #WashingtonOriginals #socent #edchat #startup #positivedisruption

The system of operations to raise up the Washington Originals shifts into second gear. Coaching staff is being confirmed and a second town hall amphitheater meeting is set to take place to share the lineup of projects for the youth and families. These include establishing a chess club, outfitting all Washington Originals with jerseys and discussing the funding of basic operations. As of now, Coach EJ, Coach Deuce, Coach Jimmy and Coach Kevin are in collaborative talks with me to facilitate the cognitive-physical programs for Ryan park. Aside from creating a theater and dance program, a chess club for the youth and families of South Norwalk is set to begin this very Fall of 2016. Last but not least, the establishment of a skateboard school that will be the sister arm of the Scalzi Originals Skateboarders in Stamford’s Scalzi Skate Park is being established. I initially started my focus on South Norwalk. Having moved into Norwalk and looking to sign up at the local...
