The #ExecutiveFunction #Surfing Analogy

Every surfer in the water who has been surfing for many years understands that there is a point in time and place when a wave is approaching and the option to paddle over it, attempt to catch it, or altogether get out of the way has to be made. Rapid fire executive function skills come into play, such as gauging, foresight, prioritization, impulse control, goal-directed persistence and even emotional control. What will the surfer do? Are they lined up to catch the wave successfully? Are they too far to paddle over the wave and then have to take evasive maneuvers, like 'duck-diving' under the white, foamy break water? But what about when the wave is too big? What about when the surfer is in the break zone, their is a new set of waves coming, and they are too deep in the wave-break zone to do much about it? What then? All these question must be addressed by the individual in split seconds. Multiple executive function skills come into play, or cascade with each other in...

The #ExecutiveFunction Skills of Being #POTUS / #servant #duty #sacrifice #America

#POTUS, or the President of the United States of America has the most mentally, physically, and emotionally taxing job on earth. It is no wonder that any occupant of the Oval Office comes in bright-eyed and bushy tailed only to leave looking 25 years older by the end of their term. Politics aside, the ability to orchestrate, manage and direct information is not just the definition of executive function skills, but it happens to be the job of the President. It is a tough job, filled with rigor, criticism, and constant attack from all sides, in every way, shape and form. In this post, I explore the storm that encircles what it means to be POTUS in the context of executive function skills. The constant decision making, the demand on the POTUS's foresight, problem solving, behavior modulation, and goal-directed persistence are enough to put one hundred people in the psychiatric ward, and yet POTUS's must do it day in and day out while in the spotlight or in the privacy o...

Upturning The Tables in the Autism World

Are established autism intervention organizations and centers the best pathway to creating 'successful' development in individuals with autism? What is the mainstream autism intervention approach these days? Why is that te main one? Has that approach 'cornered the market,' as far as providing the MOST successful intervention? Is it possible that a great number of innovative approaches are yet to be discovered? What is the goal with interventions? Do marketing dollars drive in propective families and individuals with autism into these centers, more so than actual success rates ? In an age when the mainstream approach to autism intervention sits squarely on the use of ABA, or applied behavioral analysis, the idea of innovating as a Special Educator working for an established center can, in my professional opinion, hinder the professionalism of the professional. What is more, I posit that professionals, such as Special Educators, or what is known loosely as '...

Coach Bill's Autism Parent Empowerment Proposal to All U.S. Mayors & Administrators

Dear City Hall Mayor or Representative, I have leading-edge interventions for children and adults suffering from autism that will significantly improve their quality of life. My interventions focus primarily on the development of executive function skills in individual and family members who need to provide and guide family members in support of these services.  I would like to provide these interventions to individuals referred by you at a minimal cost of $35.00 for non-housed visits, and $50.00 for home visits. I would like to offer a $5.00 donation for any referral you can provide. I would also need minimal office space to conduct non-residential services to the individuals. Namely, the program is a three step plan that I currently operate on a 1:1 basis with great success already. Number one: I perform a laser-focused executive function skills evaluation based on the observations, needs, and concerns of a parent, a caregiver, or an educator, as well as face to face observation....
